Assisting, Educating and Empowering the people of Nepal

Ten Friends is a dynamic, non-profit organization dedicated to improving lives in the 3rd world with simple, hands–on projects that make a big difference to people in need.  We work in Nepal – among the poorest countries in the world. One of the beauties of the Nepali culture is its simplicity – fancy homes, material items, and excess are seldom seen. Nepali people value family, religion, education, and basic needs like food, sanitation, shelter, clean drinking water . . . and a cup of tea with a friend. Our goal is to provide those basics so our projects focus on assistance that the Nepali people need – not what we think they need based on our culture or religion. Before we begin any project, we always ask, “Is this something you need and can use?”

Ten Friends recognizes the human impact of economic hardship throughout the world. Our values are cultural respect, human dignity, increased quality of life, and environmental preservation. We are especially concerned with the many challenges faced by children. These values guide us as we seize opportunities to empower less fortunate people and enrich their lives. 

who we are

We are an Oregon based non-profit organization and are volunteer run with no staff. We rely on individuals we support in Nepal to operate our programs and projects.  We do no direct marketing but believe that "If each of us tells ten friends about what is needed…and each of them tells ten friends…and each of them tells ten friends…then what we can accomplish has no limits. That’s the power of Ten Friends!”

    Every festival in Nepal has a story from long ago. The Dashain Festival is based on old Hindu tales and marks the triumph of good over bad. But it’s also about the unity between families and celebrating this festival with joy. The Dashain Festival teaches us that being kind to others always prevails. The people of Nepal celebrate Dashain with great passion in their country and wherever they may live.

    The Central Oregon Dashain Festival will be held on Thursday, October 3rd between 5:30 pm and 8:00 at the nationally featured High Camp Taproom in Sisters.

    The evening will include:

    • Music and a social hour beginning at about 5:30 pm
    • Dashain Ceremony beginning at about 6:00 (bring your best singing voice and dancing shoes!)
    • Brief presentation about Ten Friends achievements and plans for the next year beginning about 6:15


    Food and beverages will include:

    • Local craft beers, wine, ciders, and soft drinks (One free drink)
    • Himalayan appetizers
    • Main courses featuring a choice of Himalayan dishes (served at about 6:30)
    • Dessert

    We hope you can join the festivities and take this opportunity to meet other Central Oregon individuals who share an interest in Nepal and making this world a better place. The celebration will provide a great opportunity to learn more about Ten Friends and our efforts to assist, educate and empower the people of Nepal.

    The event is also a Fundraiser for Ten Friends with $40 (tax deductible) of your attendance fee going towards supporting our Tilahi Village projects and programs which are focused on members of the Musahar Caste.  Representing the bottom of the Nepal caste system, they are treated as ‘untouchables’ and suffer from significant discrimination resulting in extreme poverty with minimal opportunities to improve their quality of life and standard of living.
